PROLOGUE: The prologue of the book introduces WindClan, the Clan that resides on moorland, who have been defeated by ShadowClan warriors and banished from their territory. They are starving, weak and tired, and very angry at ShadowClan. The warriors are near a Thunderpath (likely under a highway) and are searching for a place t rest at night. They encounter homeless people near a fire nervously, but after realizing that the Twolegs are weak, they relax. Tallstar, WindClan's leader, orders his deputy Deadfoot to go find rats to eat, despite protest from Ashfoot, a young gray she-cat. When a tortoiseshell tells her that they must eat anything to live, and that Morningflower's kits are going to be born soon, Ashfoot relaxes. Finally, they find a place to rest in a man-made hole.
